6 Compact Cameras Perfect for Any Budget
With camera technology advancing by the day and cameras becoming ever more affordable, now is the perfect time to invest in a compact camera. But which one?
Once upon a time, the tricky part was wading through the plethora of compact camera options out there; all those brands – Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, Sony, Olympus, and more; all those numbers and figures (mega pixels, frame rate per second, video resolution); all those different lenses; it can beoverwhelming to the everyday user.
Luckily, we at Camera House have assembled a shortlist of our favourite compact cameras. There’s something for everyone; for the holiday pics, beautiful underwater snapshots, long zoom magnifying for that faraway shot, or cost-effective DSLR alternatives.
Canon Powershot D30
With 12 megapixels and a 5x optical zoom, Canon’s Powershot D30 doesn’t pack a huge amount of punch in terms of image quality. But it does have one significant feature that sets it apart from most other compact cameras: it can be taken up to 25 metres underwater.
Capable of taking great pictures in low-light situations, this extremely durable compact camera is a must for swimmers, snorkelers or beachgoers. What’s more, the lovely blue exterior shell makes this camera easy to find in your bag.
Canon Powershot SX610HS
With a cool 20 megapixels and 18x zoom, this Canon Powershot SX610 HS is perfect for amateur or recreational photographers looking to take professional-style shots. The amount of features packed into this affordable camera is astounding. Easy framing and shooting options along with great image quality are complemented with optical image resolution. A great option, especially for its price range.
Sony Cybershot DSC – RX100
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 has numerous strengths. What we think really sets it apart is its excellent picture quality. The high, sharp contrast really helps illuminate close-up objects.
Overall this camera delivers far more than its compact size would suggest. We’re sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised. And with full HD quality video capabilities, you’ll be a YouTube sensation in no time.
Sony Cybershot DSCW830
The Sony Cybershot DSCW830 is so ridiculously cheap we’ve actually had people ask if we’ve priced it correctly. It seems insane, especially when you see all the great features inside the super-slim design: the Carl Zeiss lens, the 20 megapixels, the strong 8x optical zoom, the near-3inch screen and the HD video options. This is the camera for anyone pressed for funds but unwilling to compromise on quality.
Panasonic Lumix TZ40
Panasonic have been providing consistently good compact cameras for years and this is no exception. The Panasonic Lumix TZ40 is similar to the Canon Powershot 610HS (#2 in our list). The Lumix TZ40 offers a slightly better zoom range but slightly less megapixels.
But what we love about this compact camera is its GPS and WiFi so you can keep track of exactly where the photo was taken and share them more easily than ever.
Price: $349 (with card and case). Available in blue, black, red, pink and more.
[NB. If you’re looking for even more amazing zoom functions, try Panasonic’s FZ70, a compact camera that offers an incredible 60x zoom. You’ll (almost) be able to view the moon through that lens.]
Nikon Coolpix P900
Powerhouse Japanese brand Nikon are better known for DSLRs and professional cameras but they also offer compact cameras that pack a punch and could rival a DSLR in performance.
Their compact camera range Coolpix begins at less than $100 but it’s their high-end, DSLR imitation that has our mouths agape. The Nikon Coolpix D900 offers the same image quality and DX-format image sensor as a DSLR, except it’s smaller in size, easy to use and supports super-telephoto shooting.
The state-of-the-art NIKKOR lens offers exceptional performance (83x optical zoom and a fast maximum aperture of f/6.5), so whether you’re sitting in the nosebleed section watching your favourite sports team or you’re a budding wildlife photographer trying to capture the birds and the bees, this camera is for you.
For pure performance and simplicity combined, look no further than Nikon’s D900.
Best of the rest
Fujifilm FinePix XF1 – We love the old school look of this compact camera. It does a great job at taking photos too…in any light conditions.
Samsung WB350F – Global electronics leader Samsung have come out with the WB350F, which specialises in easily connecting to other devices.
Olympus TG-4 – Olympus’ compact cameras continue to focus on toughness but don’t let their rugged looks fool you, there’s plenty of grunt inside.
