What settings did you use? Shutter 1/2 sec, f/5, ISO 100  at 28mm focal length. Tripod – Gorillapod

What inspired this shot? As soon as we drove into Salisbury, England we saw the steeple of this Cathedral and knew we had to visit it! As I stepped inside, my eyes were drawn to those endless, perfect arches and I knew I had to capture this in a special way. I was in awe of the beauty and intricacy of this building which was built between 1220 to 1258. We just don’t see architecture like this in Australia.

Did you edit this image, if so what did you do and with what program? I used Photoshop CS6 to correct lens distortion and a slight tilt. I then converted it to black and white using Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 and used some selective adjustments to bring out the detail in the arches leading into the back of the church.

Do you have any advice for our community of photographers? I did a 365 project in 2012 through 365project.org that taught me so much and exposed me to many different genres of photography. It forced me to shoot every day for a year and I learnt more than I could have imagined! I certainly never would have thought that I’d win an Architecture themed photo contest a year ago! One of the main things I learnt is that there is always something new to learn, something new to see and a new technique to try. I’ve loved my journey of experimenting with different genres and styles of photography and still enjoy a very eclectic subject matter in my work. My main advice is to keep taking photos, seek inspiration from others that you admire and don’t be afraid to try something new, you never know where it’ll take you!

Where was this photo taken? This photo was taken inside Salisbury Cathedral, formerly known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1258. Salisbury, Wiltshire, England during a family holiday to Europe in March, 2013.
