Photo Friday ‘In Your Hands’ Winner – Matthew
What camera did you use? Canon 7D with a Tamron 90mm Macro Lens
What settings did you use? f/3.5, ISO 200, 1/500
What inspired this shot? I love nature and I love macro photography. The majority of my macro photography is of insects/spiders, so it was fun to change things a little. Other inspiration came from a Flickr friend, Just Emi, who has some amazing photos of tiny little landscapes consisting of things like moss, lichen and mushrooms. I’ve never been able to capture anything quite the way she does, but I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out.
Did you edit this image, if so what did you do and with what program? I use Photoshop CS6 / Adobe Camera Raw to edit my photos. I mainly played with the contrast in this shot to help bring out the colours and detail (a little too much detail in my wrinkles!)
Do you have any advice for our community of photographers? Photos aren’t always in plain sight. Be patient, look at your surroundings. You never know what’s hiding under a pile of leaves, or scurrying around the garden. Oh and don’t forget, the cost of 1 shot, or 100 shots on a digital camera is no different, so if you’re waiting for the right conditions, take a few photos while you wait, as those right conditions won’t always eventuate.
Where was this photo taken? I took this photo in my backyard. We have a few half wine barrels which we grow fruit and vegetables in. In this particular barrel, I noticed a small clump of dirt which had some moss and lichen growing out of it. The clump I am holding in my hand wasn’t dug up, that is how it was sitting in the barrel. One little miniature garden.
I think that’s everything. Once again, thank you so much for choosing my photo. I can’t wait to get my hands on that little camera, what an amazing prize. I’ve always talked about buying a camera like that to take around with me when I don’t want to take all my DSLR gear, but investing in one camera for a hobby is expensive enough. This is just awesome!
