Photo Friday – PETS – Ben Robson
‘Photo Friday’ is a weekly photography competition that Camera House Australia runs. Every week we choose a new theme and prize, and this week the winner was Ben Robson who entered this incredibly adorable image for the theme: PETS.
We asked Ben a few questions about his image, and this is what he had to say:
Q.What inspired this photo?
A. Pets – indeed all animals! – are their own inspiration. We’re a family of animal lovers, and my wife’s sister had just had a litter of great dane puppies and suggested they might make a fun subject. She wasn’t wrong! While they’re still small, they have so much personality and attitude and are among the most beautiful puppies going around.
Q.What camera did you use?
A. I used my trusty Canon 60D and a Speedlite 430EXII.
Q. What setting did you use?
A. I used 1/250, f. 4, ISO 200, flash ETTL.
Q.Did you edit this image, if so what did you do and with what program?
A. I used Photoshop, though increasingly I find I am relying on Lightroom. Although I’m not exactly a ‘purist’, I try to make as few adjustments as possible and, actually, this is pretty much as shot. I’m not sure the Auto White Balance was spot on, but I liked the effect and kept it. I cropped and sharpened (as I always shoot in RAW) and made a few adjustments to lighten and darken a couple of areas and adjusted the contrast before cleaning up a few spots.
Q. Do you have any advice for our community photographers?
A. Improvise. I’ve been collecting bits of gear over the years but haven’t saved up for a soft box. So, I got my wife to hold the Speedlite to the left of the dogs (while squeaking to get their attention!) behind a picture frame that had been taken apart and lined with a couple of layers of baking paper!
And keep shooting! Especially when it comes to puppies who virtually never stop moving!
