What settings did you use? f2.8, 1/8sec, ISO100, 32mm focal length
What inspired this shot? I was keen to do a low light, moody type of shot. I thought a Smokey and dark environment would look great. My friend Jesse suited the personality; we shot the image in his home. Apart from placing the rooster, everything else was already there. I love the way the viewer’s eye bounces from Jesse to the Rooster, then back again, and then drift off to examine the rest of the intricacies of the image. For lighting, I used the lamp to give light to the photo frames in the picture, to light Jesse and the rooster, I used a soft box attachment to my Speedlight and held it over Jesse’s left shoulder, almost pointing directly back toward the camera. This, in effect makes the light appear to come out of the book that he is reading, which by the way is “Poetry of Robert Burns”.
Did you edit this image, if so what did you do and with what program? There was very little editing in this image. I basically just turned up the contrast a little to bring out the colours.
Do you have any advice for our community of photographers? Don’t have a lot of advice for other photographers, as I only got my first DSLR a little over 2 years ago. With this image, I had an idea and just ran with it. I played around with the lighting a bit to get this shot, Jesse only had to have 1 cigar, so it wasn’t too bad!
