Photo Friday ‘Purple’ Winner – Drew
What camera did you use? Canon 40D and Canon 10-22mm wide angle.
What settings did you use? Bulb exposure, f/16, ISO 100, daylight white balance
What inspired this shot? This shot was taken a couple of years ago and I guess the inspiration was from the new Hoya NDx400 9-stop filter I had just purchased before my vacation.
Did you edit this image, if so what did you do and with what program? Minimal editing. This was shot in RAW with the use of ND filters for the effect. Only adjustments made were a slight crop from the lower thirds to get rid of distracted rocks in the foreground, boost of white levels in Photoshop to give the image a contrast kick and finished off with a web sharpen. The purple hues were natural from the use of the ND filters during the long exposure.
Do you have any advice for our community of photographers? Don’t be quick to judge an image based on your experience behind the camera, or lack of experience with editing software. This image caused quite an issue among the other entrants in the contest, mainly a few of them who convinced themselves that this image was a fake, photo-manipulation, some even labeling it as ‘graphic design’. Amateur’s will never develop their photographic skills if they aren’t open to creativity, not everything that looks too good to be true is necessarily fake.
Where was this photo taken? Surfers Paradise – Gold Coast – Queensland, Australia.
