Photo Fridy Fear Winner – Samantha
What camera did you use? Nikon D7000.
What settings did you use? Shot at 1/200 second, f8, using one studio flash with a bell reflector, as well as a reflector held just below the girl to bounce some light into the shadows created by the overhead flash.
What inspired this shot? I want to create images that are simple but powerful, and that reveal more of themselves the longer the viewer looks at them. This particular image was primarily inspired by my own childhood fears of not wanting to get out of bed during the night because I thought hands were going to reach up from under the bed and grab me.
Did you edit this image, if so what did you do and with what program? Yes. I used Photoshop CS5 to edit the image. The main things I did were darken the edges and other areas, and brighten the child, especially her hair and eyes. I also used a clone stamp tool to clone some of the wall paper pattern onto the arms of the intruder.
Do you have any advice for our community of photographers? Just to shoot what you like and do it with heart. I think many photographers get so caught up knowing all the technical stuff and having all the best equipment that their images become soulless.
Where was this photo taken? It was taken at my aunties house in Kinglake. They lost their house in the Kinglake bushfires and this is in the new house currently under construction. All the rooms are empty of furniture and provide a good area to shoot in.
