Canons 18-55mm lense is a lense which can come as a bonus product with starter kits for most of Canon's cameras (i think i own the 550D and this lense came with it), you can also buy it off the shelf. As a starter lense it is exeptional. In all honesty depending what type of photographer you are, for example if you prefer to take photos of sport (at a distance, most of the time you wont be up close enough to take a decent sport picture), this lense woudnt be sufficiant for that task, a telephoto lense would be the way to go, using the lense for portraits, normal camera use and macro shots it will perform well under these conditions. all in all the lense is rather exeptional as a starter but you should definatley upgrade to a better lense in the future...
Good: Macro mode- the lense performs well when using the macro option
AF switch (Auto Focus)- Good to have if you arent to sharp with manually focusing , also i find it good just in case i didnt focus it right.
Bad: The zoom, to me the zoom is a biggie, the length at which it zooms is poor, using a telephoto lense (or a larger lense) makes using your camera a far better experience comapred to the 18-55mm lense
