Photo Friday – ANIMALS – Shane Smart

‘Photo Friday’ is a weekly photography competition that Camera House Australia runs. Every week we choose a new theme and prize, and this week the winner was Shane Smart who entered this incredible image for the theme: ANIMALS.

We asked Shane to give us some information about his image, and this is what he had to say:

Q.What inspired this photo?

A. I love taking photos at the Adelaide zoo.  It’s quite a challenge to create unique images at a zoo but I always enjoy trying.  I was quite lucky that Mujambi was standing in the light facing directly towards me when he looked up and yawned.

Q.What camera did you use?

A.  I used a Canon 5D mark III.  I had just upgraded my camera at the time and this was my first full day out shooting with it.

Q. What setting did you use?

A. Aperture Priority mode (AV):  ISO 400, 1/500 sec, f6.3 using a Tamron 150-600mm lens (at 400mm).

Q. Did you edit this image, If so what did you do and with what program?

A. I use photoshop but there’s not much editing involved in this image.  I like to convert to black and white by adjusting the brightness of each colour to add contrast to the overall image.

Q. Do you have any advice for our community photographers?

A. Take photos as often as you can but only share your best!  I’d love to connect with more Aussie photographers on Instagram, find me at
