Photo Friday – PURPLE & MYSTERY – Colin Davis

‘Photo Friday’ is a weekly photography competition that Camera House Australia runs. Every week we choose a new theme and prize, and this week the winner was Colin Davis who entered this incredible for the theme: PURPLE & MYSTERY.

We asked Colin a few questions about his image, and this is what he had to say:

Q.What inspired this photo?

A.I had never really done star shots before so was really eager to give them ago.  This photo was actually taken on Nilaveli Beach in Sri Lanka with a brand new camera that I had bought just before this trip.  In preparation for traveling, I always search for ‘inspirational photos’ as a way to get me excited about the trip as well as making sure I don’t miss any must do or secret amazing places.  We were staying on the beach and only a few hours ago it was storming, but cleared up quickly. With limited light pollution and a phenomenal sky, it was the perfect opportunity. (I took sooo many photos that night)

Q.What camera did you use?

A. Camera: 5DIII, Lens: Tokina 11-16 F2.8

Q. What setting did you use?

A. F2.8, 16mm, Iso 3200, 20 seconds. Manual

Q. Did you edit this image, If so what did you do and with what program?

A. I always use lightroom to touch up my photos.  In this case, due to the beautiful sky, I didn’t have to do a lot, but i did increase the exposure, vibrance and colour a bit as well as lower the temperature. I also have taken a particular liking to the new ‘dehaze’ function and tend to like adding a bit (20-30) to all my photos nowadays. I don’t use photoshop (mostly cause i don’t know how 😉 )

Q. Do you have any advice for our community photographers?

A. Experiment and try different styles, you will be surprised how much fun photography can be and you might just find that happy niche.
