Photo Friday – SUMMER – Derek Wolrige

‘Photo Friday’ is a weekly photography competition that Camera House Australia runs. Every week we choose a new theme and prize, and this week the winner was Derek Wolrige who entered into our SUMMER theme.

We asked Derek about his image, and this is what he had to say:

Q.What inspired this photo?

A. I simply wanted to capture my daughters having fun under the sprinkler

Q.What camera did you use?

A.  Canon 6D with Sigma 35mm f1.4 lens

Q. What setting did you use?

A. ISO100, Aperture f1.4, Shutter speed was 1/4000th sec

Q. Did you edit this image, If so what did you do and with what program?

A. I edited this image in RAW mainly,  then opened in Photoshop to add further sharpness and contrast.

In RAW I first colour corrected, I brought the highlights down to obtain more detail in the bright areas. I increased the shadows to get more detail in the dark areas. I brightened the image to suit (making sure not to clip the highlights in the process) and added contrast/saturation to suit as well.

Q. Do you have any advice for our community photographers?

A. I wanted to use a shallow depth of field to help separate the subject from the background, plus shooting down low helped with this as well.

I would recommend using fast prime lenses to help achieve this (using an aperture of f1.4 or f2 etc).
