Joshua Shearer Photographer of the Year

2024

Jong Kim | Launceston

Category Winners

Animals

1st

Jong Kim | Launceston

JUDGES COMMENTS
This simple image from photographer Jong Kim is proof that the old saying, “the eyes are a window on the soul”, plainly doesn’t just apply to humans.

2nd

Dani Webb | Croydon

JUDGES COMMENTS
It is the mark of a skilled photographer to be able to capture one of the world’s most ubiquitous pet animals in a way that reveals an individual’s distinctive personality.

3rd

Floyd Jones | Launceston

JUDGES COMMENTS
Swallows are one of the most difficult bird subjects to photograph in action, but Floyd Jones managed to do it in this vivid in-flight shot.

Architecture

1st

Jong Kim | Launceston

JUDGES COMMENTS
Great use of graphic shapes, light and shade, and an intense tonality. The vertical framing and tight composition bring it all together with the effect that you really just can’t stop looking.

2nd

Paul Tidey | Coffs Harbour

JUDGES COMMENTS
The obviously carefully considered framing and composition just pulls you into the heart of this image while the shadowy lighting creates mood and mystery.

3rd

Lisa McKinlay | Croydon

JUDGES COMMENTS
The Sydney Opera House been photographed millions of times so it’s hard to find something new, but this graphic study uses symmetry, shape and colour – enhanced by being shot at night – to create plenty of visual impact.

Astrophotography

1st

Joel Frankham | Lismore

JUDGES COMMENTS
Everything comes together beautifully in this image with the classic ‘leading lines’ composition taking you right into its heart and drawing attention to dramatic night sky. And the green light adds a nice little touch… definitely points for not being tempted to edit it out.

2nd

Andrew Murrell | Erina

JUDGES COMMENTS
The mysteries of the universe compellingly represented in an image that just draws you into its depths.

3rd

Simon Gregory | Hobart

JUDGES COMMENTS
There have been numerous images of this particular geomagnetic event, but this image really amps up the drama thanks to the reflections and is completely mesmerising.

Aerial

1st

Christian Byrt |Bunbury

JUDGES COMMENTS
The aerial perspective is always eye-catching, but here great composition makes this image even more compelling… and the little man-made element that jumps out at you when you suddenly spot it.

2nd

Tommi Pitkin | Broadbeach

JUDGES COMMENTS
Great photographs are always meant to ask a question of viewers and, for a moment here, it’s not obvious what you’re looking, but then you get it and find that there’s so much to look at… so it keeps you interested which is another aspect of a good image.

3rd

Simon Gregory | Hobart

JUDGES COMMENTS
The blurring of the moving waves adds a dynamic element while also creating a nice visual contrast with the static rocks.

Macro

1st

Michelle Kennedy | Erina

JUDGES COMMENTS
A tiny drop with an iridescent pattern on its surface might just as easily be a strange planet orbiting some distant star.

2nd

Jamee Van Den Brink | Toowoomba

JUDGES COMMENTS
This improbably leggy little fly’s jaunty look is sure to induce smiles.

3rd

Gary Brown | Erina

JUDGES COMMENTS
The details make this image, especially those droplets acting as magnifiers on the surface of the subject’s eyes.

Portrait

1st

Brando | Launceston

JUDGES COMMENTS
The shallow depth-of-field puts the focus on the subject’s intriguing and ever-so-subtle expression.

2nd

Paul Bulley | Adelaide Central Market

JUDGES COMMENTS
Photographer Paul Bulley poses some interesting questions in his immaculately composed study.

3rd

Michelle Kennedy |Erina

JUDGES COMMENTS
A quirky, beautifully styled picture that asks the question: “What’s going on here?”

Street

1st

Lachlan Cooper | Lismore

JUDGES COMMENTS
Street photography is often about interesting juxtapositions such as this well-spotted moment by Lachlan Cooper.

2nd

Peter Morris | Cairns

JUDGES COMMENTS
It looks like photographer Peter Morris found a particularly fruitful location out of the driving rain.

3rd

Simon Gregory | Hobart

JUDGES COMMENTS
A quirky, beautifully styled picture that asks the question: “What’s going on here?”

Landscape

1st

Lisa Frost | Bentleys Pacific Fair

JUDGES COMMENTS
This panoramic scene would be dramatic in its own right, but the tiny, exuberant figures perched at the edge of rocks really make Lisa Frost’s image “pop”.

2nd

Jong Kim | Lanceston

JUDGES COMMENTS
A well-crafted composition and a perfectly calculated exposure that encompasses both the foreground detail and the moon among the clouds, which have come together beautifully.

3rd

Ayden Cook | Croydon

JUDGES COMMENTS
Finding both tension and mystery in a landscape is no small ask, but Ayden Cook road picture manages to strike the balance.

Video

1st

Jonathan Ormandy | Launceston

JUDGES COMMENTS
A brilliant little piece of documentary-making and a very clever idea given this is a Camera House competition. There’s real scope for this to be a longer doco with TV appeal.

2nd

Ayden Cook | Croydon

JUDGES COMMENTS
Great camera work, good sound and sharp editing make for a very watchable – and enjoyable – clip.

3rd

Tatyana Stanishevskaya | Bunbury

JUDGES COMMENTS
Beautifully executed with the story succinctly told in a very compelling way.

Many thanks to our external judges for 2024
